It is not just because they believe they will be able to make it across the 2000 mile southern frontier. They are also certain that once they make it to the United States they will be able to stay.

I believe it was poland that had the greatest plan; They built two walls around their country. Anyone seeking asylum did so at the first wall. They had to have a legitimate reason for asylum. If they had a valid reason, then they were allowed into the interior of poland, between the two walls which were about 1/8 of a mile apart. Where they were told to wait until a court date. Shelters were set up to take care of their needs but there was no entertainment, no free shit. They had to maintain law and order and were charged with keeping their area clean. If they did not do this they would be evicted and permanently removed from consideration. Six months later they would look for them to have a court date to see if they qualified and voila! They were not there. Problem solved. I do not believe the poles have allowed one single shitskin in.
